On average, you should exfoliate your face two or three times a week. However, the ideal frequency is highly dependent on your specific skin type and the type of product you are using.
Recommended Frequency by Skin Type
Following type-specific protocols is essential to prevent damaging your skin barrier while maximizing benefits like improved texture and reduced clogged pores.
- Oily Skin: Typically benefits from exfoliating two to three times a week. Some experts suggest up to four times a week if the skin is extremely oily.
- Normal or Combination Skin: Generally recommended one to two times a week. Some can tolerate up to three times a week.
- Dry or Sensitive Skin: Should be limited to once a week or even once every two weeks to avoid irritation. Use gentle exfoliants and avoid rubbing too hard.
- Acne-Prone Skin: Often needs three to four times a week to reduce breakouts, though excessive exfoliation can ironically worsen inflammation.
Product Type and Usage
- Physical Exfoliants (Scrubs): Most skin types can handle these two to three times per week. For men, using a scrub once or twice a week is often sufficient, ideally after shaving to minimize irritation.
- Chemical Exfoliants (AHAs/BHAs): These can be stronger and more drying; they are typically used one to three times a week. Some gentle chemical products, like BHA serums or poly-hydroxy acids, may be safe for daily use on tolerant skin, but it is important to build up usage slowly.
- Enzyme Exfoliants: Generally gentle enough that most skin types can use them daily.
Signs of Over-Exfoliation
Over-exfoliating can strip the skin’s protective barrier, leading to long-term damage. If you notice these warning signs, stop all exfoliants immediately and switch to gentle, barrier-supportive skincare.
- Irritation: Burning, stinging, or persistent redness that lasts for hours.
- Skin Texture Changes: A tight, waxy, or “shiny” appearance that feels dehydrated rather than smooth.
- Damage: Increased dryness, flaking, peeling, or a thin, “papery” feeling.
- Reactivity: Unexpected breakouts or heightened sensitivity to products you usually tolerate.
