The Correct Order of Your Facial Skincare Routine

The general rule for an effective facial skincare routine is to apply products from thinnest to thickest consistency. This sequence allows lightweight, water-based formulas to penetrate the skin before heavier creams or oils create a protective barrier.

Morning Skincare Routine (Protection)

The primary goal in the morning is to protect your skin from environmental stressors like UV rays and pollution.

  1. Cleanser: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser to remove excess oil and sweat accumulated overnight.
  2. Toner or Essence (Optional): Use these to balance the skin’s pH levels and prep it for better absorption of subsequent products.
  3. Active Serums: Apply targeted treatments first, such as Vitamin C, which provides antioxidant protection throughout the day.
  4. Eye Cream: Apply to the delicate area around the eyes to hydrate and protect against environmental stressors.
  5. Moisturizer: Use a lightweight formula to seal in hydration and support the skin barrier.
  6. Sunscreen (SPF): The most critical morning step. Apply SPF 30 or higher as the final skincare layer to protect against UV damage.

Evening Skincare Routine (Repair)

The nighttime routine focuses on thorough cleansing and supporting the skin’s natural recovery process.

  1. Double Cleanse: Use an oil-based cleanser first to dissolve makeup and sunscreen, followed by a water-based cleanser to remove remaining impurities.
  2. Exfoliate (2–3 times per week): Use a physical or chemical exfoliant after cleansing to remove dead skin cells and unclog pores.
  3. Toner: Balance and prep the skin.
  4. Treatment Serums: Apply formulas like Retinol or Hyaluronic Acid. Retinol should only be used at night as it increases sun sensitivity.
  5. Moisturizer or Night Cream: Use a richer, more hydrating cream to assist with skin repair overnight.
  6. Face Oil (Optional): Apply after moisturizer to lock in all previous layers of hydration.

Essential Tips for Success

  • Consistency: You don’t need a 10-step routine to see results; a basic routine of cleansing, moisturizing, and SPF is more effective when done consistently.
  • Timing: Allow products a few minutes to absorb before applying the next layer to prevent “pilling”. Ideally, apply your night routine 30–60 minutes before bed.
